Wind Energy System Components

The balance of system components of a wind energy system are very similar to those of solar and other renewable energy systems.

Aside from the turbine and tower, the secondary equipment (called "balance of system") you will need includes:


Batteries, similar to other renewable energy systems, the batteries are required to be lead acid based. These are much more durable than a regular car battery (for example). The depth of discharge for a wind turbine system battery allows it to be "drained" to a certain degree without shortening the life of the battery. You will also need to find your own balance between economic considerations and battery size: larger batteries can last as long as 15 years. Of course, if your wind power system is grid-interconnected, you may choose to do without batteries.


These convert DC to AC as explained more fully on our page on inverters . Since most wind energy systems are off grid, you will need an independent system like an off grid inverter.


These might be thought of as the opposite of an inverter: they convert AC to DC. When your turbine is going strong, some or all of its generated power can be used to charge the battery.

Installation tip:

Keep wiring between your generator and your inverter to a minimum. Loss of DC voltage is very easy through wiring. AC voltage is much less vulnerable to loss. ...
