Solar Water Heaters

The practical guide

One of the most useful household appliances that save energy and the environment are solar water heaters. These appliances not only provide an ample amount of hot water but they save a great deal of nonrenewable energy as well. Because of the unlimited access to sunlight, solar water heaters can work everywhere regardless of the climate.

A solar water heater works very simply: it comes with a storage tank and a solar energy collector which is kept facing the sun. The water is passed through the storage tank and is heated by the sunlight. A water heater of this type can be used in conjunction with systems such as a pre-heater.

In this system, water passes through the solar water heater before it reaches the standard water heater and two pipes connect the solar tank to the water heater inside the house. There is an inlet pipe and an outlet pipe. The outlet pipe carries warm water from the solar water heater into the house to the standard water heater, and the second pipe carries the warm water in the opposite direction. In many cases, solar water heaters are painted black to absorb lots of light and covered with acrylic plastic so the heat does not escape.

It is best to consult the manufacturer before installation to be sure of the right size for you and your family. Once you choose the solar water heater size and model, the manufacturer or retailer can also help you select the best professionals to install the unit for you.
